JDM Naval Architect

This project is near and dear to my heart mainly because it meant dealing with the toughest client of all: my father.

Though dad didn’t have a clear vision of what he wanted, he kept repeating the word “powerful” in his description, so I knew it would have to involve an engine of sorts.

This project is around 6-7 years old, but I like going back to it and reflect on all the research and iterations I made during the process.

The old man was happy, too 🙂

Concept

Reserch

I rolled with the first image that came to my mind: a propeller. I figured this would somehow tie into the finished design and decided to squeeze every drop I could out of it.

Looking for the beast

After a long back-and-forth we thought about merging the engine theme with an organic creature. The Orca was one of the options I tried first and this image caught on really nice with dad, so I continued with it.

What's in a name?!

Parallel to working on the Orca design, I made iterations for the company name. I tried all kinds of stuff like boat hulls and nautical-looking logos, but in the end it came down to a very simple typographic design.

Final design

The Orca was the winner and the old man was pleased.

Dad liked that caption so it stayed
