04 — JDM · Brand Identity Design Case Study
A brand identity for JDM Naval Architect
Not really a case-study, nor UX focused, just a sentimental project for me as the client was my father :)

My contribution
Brand designer, research to final mark.
I ran the whole identity myself: inspiration research, concept explorations, logo iterations, and the final mark and its applications.
Overview
Dad didn't have a clear vision of what he wanted, but he kept repeating the word "powerful", so I knew it would have to involve an engine of sorts. This project is years old now, but I like going back to it and reflect on all the research and iterations I made during the process.
Research
Inspiration boards, propellers, and an orca.
I began by collecting an inspiration board of nautical and engineering logos and started playing around with various elements, trying to find a direction I was curious with.

Propellers were also a strong direction..

And after a long back-and-forth we thought about merging an engine with an organic creature. The Orca was one of the options I tried first and this image caught on really nice with dad, so I continued with it.

The pivot
This image came up almost immediately and we knew we had a winning theme that now only had to be finessed into a memorable logo.

Final design
The final design.
